Dear Fourth Grade Parents and Guardians,

Students in the fourth grade face a number of academic challenges.  In addition to mastering a challenging course of study, they must also achieve on the New York State Tests in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science.

The Franciscan Community Center is continuing its multi-faceted youth services program by offering students in grade 4 the opportunity to participate in the Franciscan Tutorial Program.

This semester we will be offering tutorial classes to fourth grade students from any local school.  These classes are designed to give students academic support and enrichment so that they may not only achieve well on their English Language Arts and Mathematics tests as well as on curriculum based work in their schools.  The emphasis of this program is largely technological.  Students will be working on laptop computers, utilizing SmartBoard and interactive websites in addition to using traditional methods.

Classes run on a two day cycle:  Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday.  Your child may attend on either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.

Classes for the Monday/Wednesday cycle begin on Monday, October 5, 2009 and end on Wednesday, December 16, 2009.

Classes for the Tuesday/Thursday cycle begin on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 and end on Thursday, December 17, 2009.

The program schedule is as follows:

2:45 – 3:15  Supervision is available in the lunchroom of Holy Name School.  Children

may relax, have a snack, etc.

3:15 – 3:30  The children are given 15 minutes to begin any homework they may have.

3:30 – 4:30  Tutorial class in session.

Full cooperation in class is expected, as is regular attendance and punctuality.

Students who do not abide by their teacher’s expectations or have repeated latenesses or absences may be asked to leave the program.

Please review your child’s schedule and register your child for classes on the days that are most convenient.
