Dear Parents, Guardians and Teachers:

The Franciscan Community Center is continuing its multi-faceted Youth Services Program to help serve the needs of the young people on the Upper West Side.  In this correspondence we would like to provide you with information regarding the coming session of the Tutorial Program.  We believe that it is important for you to consider enrolling your child in one of our courses as a way to ensure the student's success in his or her subject areas, particularly in classes in which she/he has had difficulty in the past.

The next semester of these services will begin on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 and Thursday, January 29, 2009.  Classes conclude on Thursday, May 7, 2009.  All fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade children of our community and neighborhood are eligible.  Classes during this semester will be held in the classrooms of Holy Name School, located at 202 West 97th Street.  The administrations of the school and the church kindly allow us to use their facilities each semester.  Remedial classes and enrichment courses will be offered.  You will find a detailed schedule of classes and a registration form attached to this letter.  Please complete the application in order to register your child in this program.

It is absolutely necessary that students enrolled in this program be committed to attending for the entire semester.  It is also important that students registered in the program be on time.  Each day, the lunchroom of Holy Name School will be available from 2:45pm until 3:15pm for students who arrive early.   From 3:15pm until 3:30pm, students may do homework or study under the supervision of their teachers.  At 3:30pm classes begin and continue until dismissal at 4:30pm.  Students traveling from neighborhood schools will not be considered late provided they arrive by 3:30pm.  If for any reason a child is absent on a given day, the child should bring a note on the next tutoring day explaining the reason for the absence.  This note should be written and signed by the parent or guardian.  Excessive lateness or absence may result in the child being removed from the program.

Each teacher will enforce the classroom rules which he or she deems necessary for the achievement of learning in that particular academic or enrichment area.  Students will, of course, be expected to cooperate fully and abide by these regulations.

There will be no fee for any of these courses; however, each class will be involved in a community service project.  All students in each class will be required to participate in this project.

If you are interested in registering your child for one or more of these courses, please fill out the registration form and send it to the address indicated on the form unless the application is being collected by your child's school.  Please write down for yourself the classes for which you have registered your child.  Make special note of the first day of that class and make sure that your child is present.  Most classes fill up immediately and there is a waiting list.  Students who are not present from the beginning risk having their space given to someone on the waiting list.

We hope the above information gives you a good idea of what you can expect from our tutorial program.  We are looking forward to working with you and providing a program that will meet the educational needs of your child.

Sincerely,

Ms. Mildred Morency

Director, Franciscan Community Center
