Tutoring Programs

Franciscan Tutorial Program

Our after-school tutorial program, established in 1992, is the foundation from which our community center has grown. Operating out of Holy Name Grammar School (202 West 97th Street), the tutorial program includes remedial, advanced, and enrichment courses for youth, grades 4 to 8, Monday to Thursday, from 3:15 to 4:45PM, from October to December (first semester) and February to May (second semester). Developed in response to the critical need for after-school educational assistance for our youth, the tutorial program offers classes in remedial math, reading skills, grammar and composition, English as a Second Language, and supervised homework. Advanced and enrichment courses include science, math, Spanish, composition, computer literacy, African-American studies, and music and theater. The tutorial program serves over 300 students each semester who represent as many as 15 public and private schools on the Westside of Manhattan.

Franciscan Summer Tutorial Program

Our summer tutorial targets "at-risk" public school students whose promotion to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade is jeopardized due to failing grades as well as those students seeking enrichment before the coming school year. Conducted through the month of July, we offer classes in Reading Comprehension, Writing, and Math that focus on students' areas of difficulty, as well as classes in Art and Drama that enhance the academic experience.
